Some only talk about it, others take it regularly: there is talk of CBD oil, often promoted as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and relaxing agent. In this publication, you will learn all about CBD oil and what you should consider when buying.
CBD oil is currently on everyone’s lips, among artists and biohackers. Those who do not know the oil directly associate the oil with an intoxicating effect. After all, CBD oil contains a cannabinoid (cannabidiol) obtained from the hemp plant.
Contrary to popular belief, cannabidiol (CBD) has nothing to do with the intoxicating effects of the more famous cannabinoid called THC. CBD is not intoxicating, nor do euphoric feelings of happiness arise from taking CBD oil.
What is CBD oil?
Unfortunately, the cannabidiol contained in CBD oil is repeatedly associated with the THC ingredient contained in the hemp plant. CBD and THC are two different mechanisms of action with different effects and properties. We will show you why.
THC stands for the tetrahydrocannabinol contained in the hemp plant which has been studied for many years because of its psychoactive properties. The most obvious property of THC is the wetting and intoxicating effect. The cannabinoid it contains can create a feeling of well-being and euphoria.
But did you know that THC is not the only active ingredient, but that the hemp plant consists of more than 60 different cannabinoids? Until now, scientists have only dealt with THC, now CBD, a cannabinoid from the hemp plant synthesized by Raphael Mechoulam, is becoming increasingly important.
Both THC and CBD are now among the best known cannabinoids in the hemp plant, but CBD is neither psychoactive nor intoxicating. CBD oil available in Germany may contain traces of THC, but these are negligible at a maximum of 0.2 percent, so the oil is also legally available in Germany. CBD is usually offered as a capsule, electronic cigarette liquid or together with hemp oil.
What is hemp oil?
Hemp oil is not a special oil, but a generic term for oils made from hemp. Primarily, hemp oil means a high quality vegetable oil that is created by pressing hemp seeds.
These oils are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Because of these properties, hemp oil is often used as a base for CBD oil.
What is the endocannabinoid system?
CBD products are on the rise right now. Not because they have an intoxicating effect, but because they can support the body’s optimization. But how does this effect occur?
The mode of action of CBD is not easy to understand and has not yet been fully investigated, but the so-called endocannabinoid system may contribute to a better understanding.
In general terms: the endocannabinoid system is part of the nervous system. It consists mainly of the C1 and C2 receptors. In addition, there are other receptors such as GPR18, GPR119 and GPR55.
The CB1 receptors are mainly found on nerve cells, for example in your brain, where they regulate the release of different neurotransmitters (e.g. serotonin and dopamine). CB1 receptors can also be found on intestinal and nerve cells.
Unlike CB1 receptors, CB2 receptors are found on cells responsible for their immune defence and the building up and breakdown of bone.
